HOT WATER & HYDRONICS

Valves for Hot Water and Hydronic Heating Systems

A hot water loop must deliver the required flow rate to the heat exchangers despite system fluctuations. VAMECA provides expert guidance on selecting isolation valves, control valves, and sealing solutions for industrial facilities, boiler plants, and commercial thermal networks.

Warren Controls PICV Pressure-Independent Control Valve with Actuator and Differential Pressure Regulator

Controlling flow despite pressure fluctuations

A pressure-independent control valve (PICV) combines a control valve with differential pressure regulation. Its suitability depends on flow rate, available system pressure, and the specific model's operational limits.

ACTUAL OPERATING CONDITIONS

Your system demands more than just water temperature management

Industrial hot water can circulate through a closed-loop system, supply a heat exchanger, or distribute heat across multiple buildings. Optimal component selection depends on the hydraulic flow regime, water treatment protocols, and the specific operational role of each line.

Temperature and Pressure Ratings

Please provide the supply and return temperatures, maximum pressure, and start-up conditions. Operating limits must be cross-verified directly on the equipment.

Flow Rate and Differential Pressure

System pressure is not the same as the available pressure drop across the valve. Please specify the required flow rate and operating differential pressure variations.

Treated water or glycol solutions

Identify the glycol type, concentration, and any additives. These parameters are critical for proper valve sizing and seal compatibility, particularly under extreme temperature conditions.

UNDERSTANDING THE APPLICATION

Regulate flow exchange without disrupting system circulation

In a loop system, the valve regulates flow to the consumer while the pump maintains circulation. The actual system schematic, minimum flow requirements, and dynamic performance of adjacent branches dictate the optimal valve selection.

At the branch takeoff

The control valve modulates flow, and precise sizing is critical to maintaining a fully usable control range.

Across the heat exchanger

Heat transfer rate depends on flow rate and operating temperatures. Insufficient temperature is not always caused by the valve.

On the Return Line

Verify the required isolation and non-return (check) functions, maintenance access, and available diagnostic data.

SELECT TECHNOLOGIES

Dedicated hydraulic functions engineered for every piece of equipment

Two-Way Control

It modulates the flow within the branch. Proper selection requires verifying differential pressure, flow control characteristics, and system dynamics when multiple valves close.

3-Way Mixing or Diverting

A three-way valve controls the flow distribution between two flow paths. Port orientation, as well as mixing or diverting service, must align precisely with the valve design and the hydraulic schematic.

PICVs and Differential Pressure

A pressure-independent control valve minimizes the impact of hydraulic fluctuations on system regulation across its operating range. The Warren PICV integrates two distinct control functions for optimal performance.

Isolation, Check Valves, and Protection Solutions

Isolation devices facilitate equipment separation, while check and relief valves are selected based on their specific function, flow range, and system operating conditions.

MATERIALS & SEALING

Seal selection is engineered around water quality

Temperature alone is not enough. Chemical treatments, cleaning agents, glycol, and seating surface conditions must all be factored into your material and seal selection.

Product line to be reviewed

Application to be qualified

Key Consideration

EPDM Elastomers

Hot water and selected aqueous mixtures, depending on the compound.

Check temperature, glycol levels, additives, and any potential oil contamination.

PTFE and PTFE-Based Solutions

Chemical compatibility or specialized assembly requirements.

Inspect construction, bolt load stresses, and in-service performance.

Graphite and Composite Gaskets

Industrial assemblies engineered for thermal operating conditions.

Verify quality, reinforcements, flanges, and installation instructions.

Body and Trim Metals

Treated water and loop corrosion conditions.

The selection depends on the actual process chemistry, piping system materials, and operating temperature.

MAINTENANCE & REPLACEMENT

Modernizing control based on observed operational issues

Selection Case Study: Stabilizing a Critical Heat Exchanger

The actuator is constantly hunting while the temperature continues to fluctuate. Record the flow rate, temperatures, and differential pressure across various operating regimes. An oversized valve, hydraulic instability, or loop tuning issues can produce similar symptoms.

Noisy Valve

Document the flow rate, pressures, and temperature. Excessive pressure drop may require reselecting the valve or modifying the hydraulic distribution.

Insufficient Heating

Verify actual flow rates, fouling levels, entrained air, and available system temperatures before attributing the issue solely to the valve.

Actuator Replacement

Verify stroke, thrust, control signal, and fail-safe position. Mechanical compatibility alone does not ensure proper actuation.
