INDUSTRIAL COMPRESSED AIR

Industrial Compressed Air Valves

The pressure available at the compressor does not always match what reaches the machine. Valves, regulators, and check valves must be engineered based on actual flow rates, pressure drops, and target air quality. VAMECA provides expert guidance for selecting and replacing your network components with dependable local support.

ARI PREDU · Pressure Regulating Valves

Comparing upstream supply to the point of use during peak demand helps distinguish an overall capacity shortfall from a localized distribution restriction.

Design configuration to be selected based on operating pressure, flow rate, and air quality requirements.

REAL-WORLD OPERATING CONDITIONS

The challenge: delivering the precise flow rate at the right pressure

An air demand specification must define the flow rate, its reference baseline, and the required pressure at the point of use. Standardized volume, SCFM, and actual volumetric flow rates are not directly interchangeable.

Peak Flow Rate

Simultaneous equipment demand can cause system pressure to drop. Evaluate minimum, nominal, and peak flow rates, as well as their duration.

Pressure Drop

Piping, filters, dryers, fittings, and valves all contribute to pressure drop. Measuring pressure levels under operating load provides far more actionable insight than a single static reading.

Air Quality

Specify your requirements for particulate, moisture, and oil levels. The presence of condensate or lubricants directly impacts seal compatibility and maintenance intervals.

UNDERSTANDING THE APPLICATION

From air treatment to machine operation

Piping system functions and their layout depend on the specific facility design. Industrial valves must maintain full compatibility with process treatment equipment and plant maintenance procedures.

Isolate a section

An isolation valve enables the positive shut-off of a piping segment or equipment. Safe lockout/tagout procedures also require complete dissipation of residual energy in strict accordance with site protocol.

Adjust the operating pressure

A pressure regulator is selected based on its pressure range and control capacity at the required flow rate, not solely on connection size.

Preventing Backflow and Overpressure

Check valves and relief valves serve distinct functions; proper selection must account for your specific piping network and the critical equipment requiring protection.

SELECTABLE TECHNOLOGIES

Key Piping System Components to Assess

Isolation Valves

Ball valves can provide an optimal, low-resistance flow path. Ensure pressure, temperature, sealing performance, and lockout/tagout (LOTO) capabilities are properly evaluated for your specific application.

Industrial Pressure Reducing Valves

The setpoint adjustment must remain fully operational across the entire flow range. ARI PREDU offers specialized trims for compressed air applications. Operating curves, design pressures, and the final engineered configuration must be verified.

Check Valves

Verify gas service compatibility, flow direction, cracking pressure, and pressure drop. Please note that a check valve must not be used as an isolation device for lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures.

Pressure Relief Valves

Set pressure and relieving capacity must match the overpressure scenario and the protected equipment. Line size alone is not sufficient to properly size and select a safety relief valve.

Gaskets and Connections

A seat or connection leak can lead to continuous system loss. Gasket material, seating surface condition, threading, and assembly procedures must all be evaluated together.

Pneumatic Actuation

To properly size and supply an actuator, specify the actual operating pressure available, the required stroke time, and the cycle consumption. Refer to the equipment manufacturer documentation for the required air quality standards.

MATERIALS & SEALING SOLUTIONS

Air composition is another critical factor

Air can be dry, humid, lubricated, or carry contaminants. Simply specifying "air" is therefore not enough to properly select and validate a seat or seal.

Observed Condition

To be specified

Impact on Selection

Moisture and Condensate

Expected dew point, ambient temperature, and drainage.

Evaluate corrosion, seal performance, and freezing risks based on environmental conditions.

Oil Presence

Lubricant type and available drive options.

Verify elastomer compatibility with the actual service lubricant.

Critical Process Air

Cleanliness requirements for the supplied equipment.

Verify the specified materials, lubricants, and delivery terms.

Observed Condition

To be specified

Impact on Selection

Observed condition: Moisture and condensation

To be specified: Expected dew point, ambient temperature, and drainage requirements.

Impact on Selection: Evaluate corrosion resistance, seal performance, and freezing risk based on the operating environment.

Observed condition: Presence of oil

EPDM should not be selected by default if mineral oil is present. Specific NBR or FKM compounds must also be validated based on your application's operating temperature.

MAINTENANCE & REPLACEMENT

A pressure drop does not always require a new compressor

Selection example · Machine air supply deficiency

The system appears stable at shut-off, but pressure drops as soon as equipment starts up. Measure the differential pressure upstream and downstream of your most restrictive components during this operating cycle. A clogged filter, an undersized fitting, or a regulator operating outside its calibrated range is often the root cause.

Non-operational consumption

Check for leaks and continuous purging, then inspect any equipment that remains energized.

Unstable downstream pressure

Compare regulator flow curves against actual flow rates and upstream pressure variations.

Noisy or Chattering Check Valve

Verify valve sizing and operating range directly with the manufacturer, rather than relying solely on nominal pipe size.
