What is an NBR (nitrile) seal?

What is an NBR (nitrile) seal?

NBR, also known as nitrile rubber or Buna-N, is a synthetic elastomer composed of acrylonitrile and butadiene. It is widely specified for sealing applications involving mineral oils, select fuels, and petroleum-based hydraulic fluids.

In solid sheet form, NBR is ideal for die-cutting flat gaskets for flanges, casings, covers, pumps, and other industrial assemblies. Performance characteristics depend on the specific formulation; excellent oil resistance does not inherently ensure compatibility with all solvents, hydraulic fluids, or aggressive chemicals.

American Biltrite notably manufactures AB-365, a premium black NBR engineered for oil and hydraulic applications, as well as white AB-366, an NBR/SBR formulation featuring manufacturer-documented food-grade compliance. Both grades offer an indicative operating temperature range of −40 to +93 °C.

Why Choose VAMECA for Your NBR Gaskets and Seals?

Why Choose VAMECA for Your NBR Gaskets and Seals?

Selecting the right NBR gasket begins with identifying the exact nature of the oil or fluid, followed by the operating temperature, pressure, operating cycles, and flange geometry. Shore A hardness and thickness also influence torque and clamping performance.

VAMECA can engineer custom-cut gaskets from AB-365 sheeting for compatible petroleum-based fluids, or white AB-366 for food-grade applications meeting manufacturer requirements, including full verification of operating conditions and necessary documentation.

For steam, prolonged UV and ozone exposure, specific polar solvents, or elevated temperatures, alternative materials such as EPDM, PTFE, or FKM may be more suitable.
