What Is a Silicone (VMQ) Gasket?

What Is a Silicone (VMQ) Gasket?

Silicone (VMQ) is a flexible elastomer used for static gaskets when resistance to extreme temperatures, ozone, and UV is required.

Unlike cellular silicone foam, a solid silicone sheet is engineered for die-cut parts and matched sealing surfaces. Compression set behaviour, thickness, and Shore A durometer are critical factors in gasket selection.

The American Biltrite IM-S60 grade is an example of a terracotta industrial silicone rated at 60 ± 5 Shore A. Its indicative temperature range spans from −62 to +232°C, with the upper limit intended for intermittent exposure only. Maximum continuous operating temperature must be verified based on your specific assembly and process conditions.

Why trust VAMECA with your silicone gasket solutions?

Why trust VAMECA with your silicone gasket solutions?

Selecting a silicone gasket involves far more than just its geometry. Media compatibility, continuous operating temperatures, thermal spikes, pressure, compression set, and flange surface finish are all critical factors in preventing leaks.

VAMECA can engineer custom-cut IM-S60 sheeting for covers, enclosures, flanges, and specialized geometries, matching the optimal thickness and durometer to your specific operating conditions.

Silicone is not always the optimal solution: for immersion in oils, fuels, steam, or aggressive solvents, chemical compatibility must be thoroughly evaluated, with EPDM, FKM, PTFE, or alternative sealing technologies considered as required.
