CARTseal B 24610 · Single Cartridge Seal Example

Single or Dual Packing

A single seal arrangement features one pair of seal faces, whereas a dual seal configuration incorporates a second pair.

The selection depends on the process fluid, containment requirements, and available auxiliary systems. Cartridge seals are available in single or dual configurations.

One-piece or split-body

A split design allows for the assembly of sub-components around the shaft.

Recommended for consideration when tight access and surrounding component removal complicate maintenance operations.

Balanced or Unbalanced

Seal balance relates to the hydraulic design of the mechanical seal and the forces acting on the seal faces.

It does not replace the verification of operating conditions and the installation drawing.

Rotary or Stationary

The configuration of the compensating device is an integral part of the selected design.

To be specified based on speed, equipment, and shaft movement.

Are you working from a pump part number?

The LATTY range for OEM process pumps allows our experts to evaluate direct replacement solutions based on your specific equipment. Please provide the complete part number, serial number, and any available drawings. Please note that a catalogue cross-reference does not guarantee verified interchangeability.

A LATTY replacement solution is not represented as an OEM part from the pump manufacturer.

PROCESS BEFORE PART NUMBER

How your application impacts product selection.

Water and Wastewater

Water quality, particulates, intermittent operation, and seal chamber pressure: evaluate the individual components or cartridge, then determine whether auxiliary systems are required.

Mining, Slurries, and Abrasives

Particle type, size, and concentration, scaling, crystallization, and process variations. Sealis is a proven, documented solution that should be validated against the specific chamber environment.

Fibers, fillers, concentration, temperature, and clogging risks. Evaluate protection for moving components, seal faces, and accessibility for maintenance operations.

Exact composition, concentration, temperature, and containment requirements. Evaluate the complete assembly—including seal faces, secondary seals, and metallurgy—as well as single or dual arrangement options.

Food Processing & Clean-in-Place (CIP)

Product specifications, wash cycles, operating temperatures, and documentation requirements. Certificates must strictly match the delivered valve configuration and materials.

Agitation and Mixing

Whether mounted on the top, bottom, or side of the vessel, accommodating liquid levels, shaft runout, and process phases, LATTYmix seal cartridges are engineered to meet the specific integration demands of agitators.

THE ENTIRE SYSTEM MUST BE FULLY INTEGRATED AND CONSISTENT

The seal faces do not operate in isolation.

Seal Face Combination

Impregnated carbon, silicon carbide, and tungsten carbide are among the proven material selections in these categories. The selected seal face combination depends specifically on the process fluid and particulate levels.

Secondary Seals

FKM, EPDM, HNBR, or FFKM are available depending on the specific part numbers. Media formulation, concentration, operating temperature, and cleaning cycles must all be evaluated together to ensure optimal performance.

Body Chamber and Metallurgy

Stuffing box pressure, temperature, shaft speed, and shaft condition all drive the selection process. Keep in mind that pump discharge pressure does not automatically equal seal chamber pressure.

Flush, Quench, Buffer, or Barrier?

Flushing

Process-side supply or circulation, depending on the selected piping configuration.

Quench

Atmospheric side auxiliary fluid. This is not a pressurized barrier.

Buffer or Barrier

Barrier or buffer fluid for dual mechanical seal arrangements, engineered with specific pressure, circulation, and monitoring requirements tailored to the system configuration.

LATTYlub systems are operational support systems. Their selection and piping connections must comply with the installation specifications. They are not mechanical seals.

Catalogue limits for temperature, pressure, and speed may not necessarily apply simultaneously. Rotational speed in RPM and peripheral speed in m/s are two distinct operating parameters.

RELIABILITY

The packing is leaking again. What should we inspect?

A single symptom can stem from multiple root causes. Before altering materials or valve configurations, let's thoroughly review your operating conditions, installation parameters, and any recent process changes.

When?

During start-up, post-cleaning, in steady-state operation, or following a shutdown.

For how long?

Typical service life, replacement intervals, and failure progression.

Under what operating conditions?

Medium, intermittent operation, process changes, and auxiliary system operation.

What were the specific observations?

Photos of faces and assembly, along with markings and inspection reports, are available.

Retrofitting from compression packing to a mechanical seal requires a detailed engineering assessment: the stuffing box, shaft, interfaces, and operating conditions must all be thoroughly verified.

BEFORE ORDERING

Practical solutions for your industrial requirements.

Can a mechanical seal or packing be identified from photos?

Photos allow our technical team to initiate component identification. Please capture the entire assembly, all visible markings, and the pump nameplate. Additional engineering drawings or critical dimensions may be required to verify and confirm the exact replacement solution.

Is the shaft diameter sufficient?

No. You also need to verify the stationary seat, housing, working length, and mating interfaces. For a cartridge seal, the gland, bolting, and port connections are equally critical.

What is the difference between component and cartridge seals?

A component seal is installed piece by piece directly into the equipment, whereas a cartridge seal combines multiple components into a pre-assembled unit. This mounting configuration alone does not determine whether the mechanical seal is a single or double arrangement.

How to select between single and double configurations?

Selection depends on the process fluid, seal chamber conditions, containment requirements, and auxiliary systems. Dual-seal configurations also require defining the buffer or barrier fluid and its operating mode.

When Should You Inspect a Split Packing Seal?

Where seal access requires extensive peripheral dismantling, the suitability of a CARTseal B 25 must be evaluated based on radial clearance, shaft specifications, flange dimensions, and operating conditions.

Can you cross-reference and evaluate a part from another manufacturer?

Yes, to find a suitable LATTY replacement solution. Sizing, mounting, materials, and operating conditions must be verified prior to confirming full compatibility.

What technical specifications should be provided for a slurry pump inquiry?

Describe the fluid and any solids, including concentration and particle size if known. Please specify operating temperature, seal chamber pressure, shaft speed, potential for clogging or crystallization, as well as the current mounting arrangement and seal support systems.

Which documentation and product availability details can be requested?

Request the data sheet for your selected configuration, dimensional drawings, and the certifications required for your application. Availability and lead times will be confirmed in your quote, based on the requested configuration and quantity.
