PTFE Construction and Benefits for Flanges

SIGMA 500 is a biaxially oriented PTFE sheet material filled with hollow glass microspheres. Its typical density of 1.4 g/cm³ and ASTM F36 compressibility of 35% set it apart from denser silica- or barium sulphate-filled PTFE materials. Published recovery reaches 44% under the brochure's test conditions. For a 1.5 mm thickness, the brochure reports an ASME gasket factor m of 1.4, a minimum seating stress y of 13 MPa, and an EN 13555 Qmin/0.01 of 16 MPa. ASTM F38 creep relaxation is 31%. These parameters are derived from specific test methods and do not represent universal assembly criteria.

Applications and Selection Limits

This construction can be considered when bolt loading is moderate or when flange sealing faces exhibit minor imperfections. The SIGMA brochure indicates a temperature range up to 260°C and maximum pressures that vary depending on thickness. Maximum values must not be combined without verifying the pressure-temperature curve and the actual service fluid.

Key Considerations Prior to Replacement

The microsphere filler enhances compressibility, but does not guarantee the same chemical compatibility as silica- or baryte-filled PTFE grades. Verify concentration, continuous operating temperature, flange face condition, dimensions, and bolt torque. Do not assume approvals carry over from another SIGMA grade.
